Sabai dee in Laos

“Sabai dee” is a common greeting in Laos, and it means “How are you doing.” You will be greeted this way everywhere, by smiling and friendly people that are truly pleased to see you.

Untouched by the Outside World

Unspoiled Beauty LaosOften neglected as a tourist destination and with memories of the war still fresh, tourism in Laos has never reached the intensity of neighboring Thailand. But this is part of the country’s charm. This small country in Southeast Asia gives you a great opportunity to enjoy seeing first-hand the beautiful Laotian way of life that dates back to the old days, unspoiled by the modern world. Laos has a rich cultural heritage and friendly people. This enchanting and charming country is one of the best places in Asia to go if you want to relax and be surrounded by Mother Nature, take in the exotic beauty of the Mekong River, and enjoy comfortable hotels at very reasonable prices.

Quaint Colonial Charm of the Capital City

Old-World Attraction LaosThe capital city of Vientiane is surprisingly relaxed for a capital city. Sitting along the scenic Mekong River, you will see a remarkable mix of architecture that reflects the country’s colonial past. There are many houses made in traditional French colonial style, and you will even see what looks to be a duplicate of the Arc de Triomphe. This is actually the city’s Victory Monument, and is located in the center of town. The European influence is underscored by quaint cafes serving French bread and coffee everywhere, complete with waiters who still call you “Monsieur” or “Madame.”

Buddha Everywhere

Buddha Park, LaosAlthough the European influence is evident, there is still no question that you are in Asia. Spectacular Buddhist temples are abundant, along with majestic stupas (pagodas). Just outside of town, Wat Xieng Khouang, also known as Buddha Park, should not be missed. This incredible park offers a look at some spectacular (and very large) Buddhist and Hindu statues towering over you as you stroll through the grounds.

The Royal Color of Luang Prabang

Cultural Center LaosLuang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage town, attracts thousands of visitors every year. Well known as a cultural center of Lao culture, Luang Prabang has dozens of very large temples (wats) with majestic architecture, and visitors are welcome. Although Laos is now a communist country, Luang Prabang, as the old Royal capital, still features the royal palace on display, complete with incredible works of art and a good look at the old history of the monarchy.

Xiang Khouang's Plain of Jars

Plain of Jars LaosVenturing deeper into the country, you can go to the province of Xiang Khouang and see the mysterious Plain of Jars, an open landscape that is dotted with hundreds of huge stone jars. The jars themselves weigh several tons, and are said to be over 2000 years old.

Laos Awaits You

Explore Around LaosThere are plenty of guided tours and excursions throughout different parts of Laos, from the traditional hill tribe communities, throughout the Mekong Valley, to the infamous Ho Hi Minh trail. The best time to go to Laos is between November and March when the weather is more hospitable.
